Red Tiger Rose
Full color Dharma Wheel artist's print
During a recent trip to my favorite used book store in Center City Philadelphia, I picked up a large book and found a picture of a Buddhist monk playing with several wild animals, the most fascinating of which was an adult Bengal tiger. They nuzzled and wrestled and chased each other like children. Care and compassion were shared.
Across the cobblestone street from the bookstore, in a colonial church garden, hundreds of red roses bloomed in the late summer afternoon sun. I paged through the book while sitting on a bench in the garden and, after closing my eyes and turning my face toward the sun, I imagined the monk and tiger strolling through the garden, immersed in a sea of red petals.
Just then, a monk walked by, walked into the church garden and began to smell the roses.
