Red Earthen Elevation
Full color Dharma Wheel artist's print
Available framed or unframed
The Himalayan tree line appears at between 12,000 - 16,000 feet elevation. Above this point, ground vegetation is sparse. Red and black soil is common, especially in Nepal and Bhutan, and supports both evergreen and deciduous plant life, with broadleaf maple trees populating millions of acres.
The nature of a deciduous plant’s life cycle, where there is a seasonal rebirth mixed with an unmistakable long term growth arc from sapling to towering presence, is a perfect metaphor for the hope offered by the Noble Eightfold Path.
I imagine this Dharma wheel was baked hard from red soil, painted completely with gold leaf and painted again in a thick, warm, red-brown icing. The detailed relief pattern was slowly and methodically carved with a sharp scribe, over the course of fourteen days, revealing the brilliant gold underneath. The carved channels invite fingers to trace a map that never begins, never ends and can be touched anywhere on the continuum.
The veins of a maple leaf, falling from a tree grown miles above the sea, with water from a snow cap, can’t be traced.
