Painted Chestnut Cooper
Full color Dharma Wheel artist's print
Available framed or unframed
For some reason, when I look at this wheel, the first thing I consider is the wood joinery required to build and sculpt it. When I began this wheel, I just started drawing -- improvising and responding to the shape or color I had just created seconds before. When finished, I stood back and I could see this wheel crafted from wood, with extensive colorful geometric inlays that somehow convey a red floral pattern, hanging on a nearby wall. The large spokes extending beyond the outside circle are large, thick, solid and and would be sanded to a smooth and elegant finish.
Imagine the dovetail, dado and finger joints needed to build the warmth that will occupy this wheel. Consider the individual pieces, like a puzzle, sitting separately on the floor of a wide open, well lit studio, waiting to be glued and drilled and pegged. Blocks of chestnut the size of carpenter's tool box sit side-by-side with inlays cut and shaped to resemble the stem of a rose or a wisp of smoke from an extinguished candle.
Actually building this wheel requires a level of craftsmanship that I don't possess. It will require a master to coax it forth from pieces of raw wood and then massage the pieces into a strong and delicate presence.
One step at a time. Never eight steps all at once -- until they all become a seamless whole.
