Hidden Within Potala

Full color Dharma Wheel artist's print

Potala Palace, the former home of the Dalai Lama in Lhasa Tibet, sits on a hill, almost in the sky. Somewhere in the city, possibly within the palace, carved into the truss beam of a ceiling, is the fraternal twin to this Dharma Wheel. The twin, at once, represents freedom, subversion, confrontation, history and Buddhism.

In 1959, The Dalai Lama fled the palace and has been living in exile in India ever since. He fled, in large measure, because the Chinese wanted him arrested and possibly dead. The palace was begun in 1645 by The 5th Dalai Lama and and was occupied by every subsequent Dalai Lama until 1959. The palace, and the city of Lhasa, are the worldwide home to Tibetan Buddhism. In a country where the government, for decades, has actively discouraged the practice of any faith tradition, the the palace stands in silent defiance - never wavering - whispering  the paradox of a higher power, whether interior or exterior, into wind and into the world.

Along the trail to Lhasa, and Potala, the brightest colors and the most ornate reverential objects occupy the way. Flags, banners, bells and adornments dance both when they move and when they fall still.

I've never been to the palace and have no idea what it looks like inside. I expect, however, that it is appointed with silk and saffron standing hand-in-hand with patina iron bells that can evoke the rich bass resonance of mindfulness and nothingness. Among them, there is a place for simplicity - this wheel might be simple enough.
