Handwritten Red Sky
Full color Dharma Wheel artist's print

John Cage, the modernist composer and musician, often delivered silence instead of music. Or, perhaps more accurately, he found silence within music. A large portion of the remainder of his entire body of work, when he chose to incorporate sound, relied on the element of chance. The single most consistent element of his music is the simple measurement of time passing. Nobody knew what was coming next, including John. It may come as no surprise that John practiced Zen Buddhism.
At times, I incorporate chance into my work and, if beginning work on a wheel with little idea or direction as to the outcome can be considered chance, then I utilize the concept frequently.
When I stepped back from this wheel, after having worked very closely for an extended period, I noticed a sun in the middle, surrounded by a red sky, surrounded by a second sun hanging in another red sky. The eight spokes were never intended to be viewed as rays of sunlight and, in this case, can be in only a rudimentary way – accidental, sublime and simple.
