Eightfold Carving Ebony
Full color Dharma Wheel artist's print
Available framed or unframed
A dark, dense, black wood, ebony takes physical strength to carve. It doesn't yield easily and, when a carving is finished, the tools used to render the artwork possess exhausted edges that require sharpening. The process of calling a precise shape forth from the wood is contrasted by the wrestling match and wits required to finish the carving.
I have yet to experience carving ebony. The above description comes from speaking with craftspeople who have had the opportunity to work with the wood.
Unlike this image, the final wheel will be black-on-black and carved out of a square. I'm intrigued by the idea of a black-on-black image for a Dharma Wheel because, from certain angles, it will be impossible to see. And, as the wood square is spun in light, that which is visible of the wheel will change. Shadows, perhaps, will play a greater role in the final version of this wheel than any of the other wheels I will create.
This version is a sketch and a final artwork at the same time. I like that idea.
