Concentric Twin Rhythms
Full color Dharma Wheel artist's print
Available framed or unframed
Consider the idea of two full orchestras, comprised of any instruments you enjoy, each made up of 60 or more musicians. The first forms a tight circle at the center of a wheel. Each player’s elbows are almost touching and, for those closest to the middle, there are four or five artists on all sides. Everyone is looking outward from the center.
The second circle is much larger, with musicians sitting side by side, looking inward toward the center. A conductor strolls between the circles in any manner she likes. Some members almost never see her because her path and station are completely unpredictable.
Together, very quietly, as quietly as possible, every musician begins to play whatever they feel. It sounds like they are tuning, preparing for a concert half a mile away. The conductor finds a rhythm and begins to improvise, bringing absurdity and silliness to an endeavor designed to squeeze sublime joy from the fingers and souls of every seat.
