Inspiration
Crossroads exist. Some take the form of a decision. Others are an intersection of experiences, people, stories or lifetimes. I am of the opinion that one can live more than one life at a time. Memory confirms this belief.
My oldest memory comes from when I was less than two years old. Few people believe me. My mother, however, will confirm my presence in the boarding house where my parents and I were staying during a weekend trip to the New Jersey shore.
I remember walking down the main hallway of the home. In my mind’s current eye, the molding seems huge because I was so small. This memory is fairly clear and I have a recollection, from those brief moments, that the experience would be remembered forever. It’s as if I became aware for a seven or eight second burst and then returned to wherever we are before sustained consciousness arrives.
My experience was real – the lack of consciousness, the consciousness and the return to unconsciousness. The path, as near I can tell, was linear. Given the fact that my parents have a linear memory of their lives at that time, it’s clear that I experienced a parallel consciousness for several seconds. Before and after, the parallel is more unsure. Perhaps life is a drop of rain being blown around by a swirling wind and split by a taut string.
Once split, the drop can come back together, take two different forms, dissolve or fall into the ocean. Perhaps it can do all four at once.
