In Pennsylvania, in early December, the edge of the horizon, at dusk, can glow like an ember. From that point, the sky bleeds into red, purple, blue and black. My home sits at the highest point between the Delaware River on the eastern edge of Pennsylvania, and the vast rural forest in the center. When I look out of my bedroom window, I can see ten miles into the distance. As a result, I am one of the last people to see the sun in my part of the state.
In my bedroom, there is a cedar chest I inherited from my grandfather. For the first half of the Twentieth century, he lived in a rowhome without closets and it held most of his clothes and personal belongings. He kept the door to the chest open and, as a result, his room embraced the aroma of cedar.
In December, I make sure to stop, sit in the window and be mindful for a couple of minutes each night. It’s a nice point of departure for meditation.
I no longer live in the home described. In fact, I haven’t lived there for twenty-one years. The window and the sky remain as vivid as if I were there yesterday.
